Fifty Shades of Grey: the male perspective

So my fiance thought it would be an interesting idea to write about the Fifty Shades of Grey movie from his point of view. I thought it would be fun to get some male perspective on the site so here we have it, my fiance’s thoughts on Fifty Shades of Grey.

I’m a simple man who likes simple things…Actually I’m a pretty complicated guy who has no idea how my girl has been with me for this long. I’ve put her through many looks of “what are you talking about”, babe please be quiet I’m watching the fight, and about five Quentin Tarantino movies. So for Valentine’s Day when she said she wanted to see 50 Shades of Grey, I didn’t decline. “You know this is going to be bad don’t you?” I said. She agreed knowing after the previews that the movie wasn’t going to do the books justice. But she just had to see it. I thought maybe it could be so bad that I could laugh about it.

For those who have been living under a rock for the past couple of years, 50 shades of grey is a book about a young woman who, after interviewing a millionaire for her college roommate, ends up dating him. This is not the usual relationship though as they are involved in a Dom/Sub BDSM relationship. The book …series of books took the world by storm, I guess because of the subject matter and made many vanilla singles and couples take an interest into BDSM. Don’t know what any of these terms are? Google it, that’s what Mr. Grey told the girl to do.

With in the first 20 min. of the movie I realized about 10 things wrong with the movie. One, the main girl was plain looking. Two if I had to pick somebody in the movie it would be the receptionists. Three, she’s a horrible journalist. Four, yeah I know she’s not really a journalist but she’s doing an interview for her friend who’s sick…I can’t remember if it were for the school paper or class or whatever but her friend should not get credit for the story. Five, they are horrible at emotion. Six, he already has her hooked. Seven, did I miss something? What does he do, and are his 2/3 receptionist and himself the only ones that work there? Eight, he’s allegedly a very busy man….we’ll get to that later. Nine, Anna just let her flu ridden roommate get close to her and then take her sandwich. Ten her flu ridden roommate seems like she just magically got better in a matter of hours.

These of course were not the only things wrong with this movie. The sex scenes played like soft-core porn, but I’ve seen worse on skinnamax. The chemistry between the two main characters played more like a stalker/victim relationship in some scenes. Like seriously this dude would pop up out of nowhere like the Terminator or a killer in a slasher movie. Maybe this movie could have been better if it was a thriller because the guy would have been more believable.

I had many more issues with this movie. Not trying to body shame anyone, but while some might complain about the nudity in the movie, I’m complaining about seeing the poor girl’s ribs every time she breathed. Her roommate took her sandwich, her man took a bite of her toast, she didn’t eat whatever that soup/salsa crap was that her parents were eating..I almost thought I was watching the Hunger Games for a second.

Long story short, I could continue to rip the movie, but my girl said it was actually pretty true to the book. Which makes me wonder if the rich sadist opens up a young virgin college grad into a sexual awakening maybe is not the best thing to put on the big screen? Or is the book just that badly written.

Pink and Glitter Manicure

So, pink and glitter are my favorite colors. Yes glitter is a color, in my book anyway. I thought I would share a simple pink and gold glitter nail look I did with you lovely peeps.

Pink and Glitter manicure

These are the products I used to create this look:

  • A. Colors Base & Top coat- I used it as a base coat on my nails. It is really affordable, you can find it at the dollar store for $1.
  • l.f.’s gold star- I won this in a pack of nail polish so I thought it would be good to try. I liked it because it had really big pieces of glitter that showed up well.
  • Wet n Wild lavender crème- I’ve been stumped by this name because it is a pink color but whatever, it’s pretty. PLUS it is another affordable color.
  • Orly won’t chip top coat- I’ve had this for a while and I’ve used it before, but I worked in a place that your nail polish chipped no matter what. I’m excited to see how it holds up now.
  • Essie quick-e drying drops- If you have not used this, stop what you are doing and GET IT! It really does help your nails dry faster for those of us who find a million things to do right after we do our nails.

I Love Clearance: e.l.f.

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE clearance. When I go to a store it is the first thing I look at. What can I say, I love a good deal.

Any who, I went to Target the other day, not for makeup but I always like to look. I was pleased to see they had some massive clearance sales going on. It seemed like all of the different brands had at least a few things on sale or clearance. E.l.f. had a ton of stuff on clearance. Most of their stuff is super affordable already so clearance is a double win.

e.l.f cosmetics clearance e.l.f. cosmetics mini haul

I had a lot of things picked out, but I narrowed it down to these few things:

  • HD Blush in encore- Originally $3 marked down to $2.10.
  • 3 custom eyeshadow pans in peach fuzz, driftwood, and wheat.- Originally $1 marked down to $.70 each.
  • 2 Long-lasting lustrous eyeshadows in toast and celebration- Originally $3 marked down to $2.10
  • Custom Compact- Originally $1 marked down to $.70

I haven’t gotten to use anything except the HD blush so far. I will say that the blush is very pigmented and a little bit goes a really long way. I had to go back over it with foundation to try to tone down the color. The Long-lasting lustrous eyeshadows are a creamy shadow, which I wasn’t expecting, and it is said that they can be used as eye liner as well.

I hope to do a look with these in the near future to give you an idea of how they look on the skin and what I think of the products.

Review: Fifty Shades of Grey

I did it. I couldn’t resist. I went to see Fifty Shades of Grey yesterday… and I drug my my fiance’ along with me. He was a trooper.

I read the books a few years ago, and I must admit, at the time I enjoyed the books. I know a lot of people have complained that the writing isn’t great. I’m not saying it was wonderful. I am an absolute book worm, and my genre of choice is romance. I have read many romance books ranging from bestsellers to first time writers. Fifty Shades doesn’t fall into my top favorite books, but where I was in that time in my life I liked it.

Well the movie is a different story. I want to start by saying I don’t’ think this is a book that really should have been made into a movie. One of the things I absolutely love about reading is that I can image characters, scenes, rooms, settings, or whatever, however I want. I create everything in my mind. I don’t know that this is a book that could truly be put into movie form and still portray everything the book did. I will say the set, from Christians penthouse, to the view, to the red room were all actually very realistic and well done.

Then there was the acting. I don’t know much about the actors themselves, but at some points it was painful for me to watch. It seemed very forced and mechanical in a way. My fiance made the comment that he kept waiting to see what the big climax, no pun intended, or conflict of the story was. It
did finally come in the final few minutes of the movie, but I think it left me more disturbed than anything.

I hate to say I overall was not impressed with the movie. After seeing the previews I had a feeling that it would be that way, but I still had to see it. They did a great job on the set, I think the acting fell short. However the acting may have fell short because, like I said, I don’t know that this was the best book for a movie adaptation.

Ashley Stewart Girls Night Out Event

Hey, Hey!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Valentine’s Day! I wanted to do a quick post about the Ashley Stewart Girls Night Out event I attended last night. I’m rather new to this area, and it seemed like the perfect way to get out and do something fun. The event was hosted by Aniah Denise and there was a special guest speaker Rebecca Lynn. Rebecca Lynn is a matchmaker, and gave advice about dating and being ready and open to finding a sound relationship.

In between the speaker and the Q & A sessions, where Rebecca Lynn answered any questions the ladies had, there were models that worked the room in outfits they put together from the clothing at Ashley Stewart. It gave a nice look into different ways to pair different items, which I thought was fun. There was also a guest appearance from Jessica Ammons from the reality show Big Women, Big Love.

In addition to the speakers and discussion, they had refreshments and prizes. I happened to win a big thing of e.l.f. nail polish. Anyone that knows me knows that my love for nail polish is real, so I was pretty excited to win!

This is one of the reasons why I’m happy I moved to a bigger city, there are more opportunities for events like this. I thought the event was a nice low-key way to spend a Friday evening.

#TBT: Valentine’s Day on a Budget

I was looking at old pictures on my computer and I ran across some photos of my fiancé’ and my first Valentine’s Day together. We were broke college students, and although we didn’t have a lot of money, we both wanted to have a special first Valentine’s Day together.

Besides being on a budget, restaurants are notorious for being crazy busy on Valentine’s Day. So, we created our own romantic dinner at home.

Candle lit dinner

My fiancé’, who at the time was my boyfriend, put a white cloth on the table. He found candle holders and candles at the dollar tree. He then made a homemade steak dinner and we had sparkling cider to drink.

Heart Valentine's Day Cake

I got a silicone heart shaped mold from the dollar tree, and made a cake that said “BE MINE”.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about all the gifts you get. It should be more about spending time together and showing each other love.

Some other things you can do to celebrate on a budget are:

  • Make a card– whether you hand craft it or make a personalized picture collage card from a photo lab, personalized cards are beautiful.
  • Binge watch Netflix- Watching your favorite Netflix show together gives you the chance to relax and enjoy each other’s company.
  • Have a drink- Some people like wine, I like sparkling apple cider. Regardless of what you enjoy toast to you and your relationship.
  • A small token- One year we had agreed that we weren’t going to do anything for Valentine’s Day. When I got off of work that evening there was a copy of the new Justin Timberlake C.D. in my car. It was a small, sweet gesture because he knows I love JT.
  • Give each other a massage- Everyone loves a good massage right? You can buy massage oils from places like Bath & Body Works, or you can even use natural oils like sweet almond oil or jojoba oil. It can be a relaxing time to talk and relieve stress and your skin will come out feeling soft and moisturized. That’s a double win!
  • Dress up- Remember, just because you may not be going out doesn’t mean that you can’t get dolled up for each other!

I hope you all have a wonderful Valentine’s Day, whether you spend it with your significant other, friends, family, or yourself!

A Purple Valentine’s Day look

Hello Beautiful People!

With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, I thought that it would be appropriate to do a Valentine’s Day look. Although my fiance and I don’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day anymore, I still LOVE a cute V-day look. The great thing about it is you can also use this look for a girls night out or a regular date night!

Valentine's day makeup

For this look I used:

  • The Nudes Palette By Maybelline
  • L’Oreal’s Infallible Pro-Matte in the shade Soft Sable (111)
  • Black Radiance’s Press Powder in Warm Hazel (8605A)
  • NYC’s Smooth Skin Loose Face Powder in Translucent
  • Maybelline’s Color Tattoo in Painted Purple
  • L.A. GIrl Pro Conceal in Fawn (GC983) for high light and Dark Cocoa (GC988) for contour
  • L’Oreal’s Silkissime eyeliner in Charcoal
  • Ulta’s Extreme Wear Matt Finish Mousse Blush in Peach Glow
  • Black Radiance’s lip colors in  Tropical Sunburst (5001B) and Brandywine (5010)
  • L’Oreal’s Voluminous Miss Manga Mascara
  • The POREfessinal by benefit

Maybelline The Nudes Palette

To start the eyes I went in with the brown on the second row, second column and used that in the crease as a transition color. I then used the Maybelline Color Tattoo on my eyelid. I used the gold on the top row of the Nude’s pallet in my crease. Then I mixed the black and the bronze like color on the bottom row and used it in the very outer corner of my eye to smoke it out a bit.

I won’t go too in depth about the rest of my face routine in this post, but I have to shout out the POREfessional pore minimizer. Do you know what silk feels like? Well that is exactly what this product felt like going onto my skin. I generally have larger pores and I could see a noticeable difference in my makeup when I used this.

I used two different lipsticks with this look. The first was the Black Radiance Brandywine. It is a beautiful deep red-ish maroon color. It is a very romantic color for the occasion.

The second lip color is a bit unique, at least to me, but I ended up LOVING it. It is such a beautiful color.  It was also Black Radiance and it is in the color Tropical SunBurst.

I hope this gave you some ideas for a look for your Valentine’s Day or even just for a regular ole date night!

Mini Dollar Tree Haul

Hello, Hello!

I made a trip to the dollar tree for some items I wanted for a little project. I got the things I needed for my project, and picked up a few other beauty related things on a whim. I thought I would share some of my finds!  Dollar Tree Haul

I went in because I wanted to make some makeup brush holders. I wanted to get some glass containers and a filler like beads or marbles. I originally wanted square containers, but they did not have any so I found these cute little round ones. I also ended up getting white little pebbles for the filler.

DIY makeup brush holder materials

They looked really cute, but once I assembled the holders and tried to put my brushes in I realized that the pebbles weren’t the best choice. Luckily everything I got was only a dollar so I didn’t lose too much in my error of judgement. I did see some what I believe was called black accent sand that I am going to try in place of the pebbles.

The other things I found were random impulse buys. I picked up an eyelash curler because I didn’t currently have one.  I also bought some liquid eyeliner in the color black/brown by L.A. Colors and a blush in the color pink, also by L.A. Colors. I haven’t opened the eye liner to try out yet. i’m trying to perfect my winged eye liner, so I figure even if it isn’t great I can use it for practice. L.A. Colors makeup
